Thanks for the comment! I’m a huge fan of the Metal Gear series (both the original NES game and the MGS games on PlayStation), so I’m hoping to tackle the Metal Gear board game in the months ahead. Enjoy Dead Cells, and if you want to learn the system, the implementation on Board Game Arena is a great place to start.

It’s a lot slower than this but such a great stealth game

Great writeup!

Comment on Red Flag Over Paris Game Review by Andrew Lynch https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/red-flag-over-paris/#comment-143248 Sat, 08 Feb 2025 12:48:41 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=reviews&p=246007#comment-143248 In reply to Whycantreviewersactuallyreviewagame.

I wrote this review a while ago, so I read it again keeping your question in mind, and I’ll tell you what, Whycantreviewersactuallyreviewagame, this may be an unusual review, but it talks about the gameplay, it points out sources of tension, it covers the efficacy of the solo mode, it talks about the thoughtful ways in which the game design is rooted in the real history of the event, and its primary focus, implicit in the premise of the piece, is that the game is a good entry point into historical board games. Seems like the actual review is right there if you’re willing to read it in good faith.

Comment on Great Western Trail: New Zealand Game Review by TS https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/great-western-trail-new-zealand/#comment-143111 Sun, 02 Feb 2025 15:43:13 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=reviews&p=287083#comment-143111 Great analysis. I had a similar take-away and it’s honestly jarring seeing how some years later, so many people seem to prefer NZ.

I guess more vibrant colors and feel-good mechanics really do sell.

In our four games, the winner has always followed a heart/feather strategy by going hard on the pyramids in the early game. I think the balancing in the game is ultimately going to come down to the players.

Comment on Carcassonne Big Box 7 Game Review by Tom Olhiser https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/carcassonne-big-box-7/#comment-142779 Tue, 21 Jan 2025 16:54:40 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=reviews&p=290626#comment-142779 Great review! Very entertaining. One small correction re: The Gold Mines mini-expansion; the gold bars on a tile are not feature-specific. So if a feature is completed, the bars just have to be on the tile in order to collect them.

Comment on Things in Rings Game Review by Adam Sequoyah https://www.meeplemountain.com/reviews/things-in-rings/#comment-142673 Fri, 17 Jan 2025 23:22:04 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=reviews&p=310962#comment-142673 Kevin, you’re spot-on calling out Subjectivity as Things in Rings’s most important feature. (And also possibly its best feature — and potentially its downfall). The “knower” can find themself in quite the pickle when the categories are open-ended. So can the players, when there could be any number of ways to interpret the clues.

Is a coffin “useful”? What about a taco? It’s kind of obvious that an apple is “round.” But what about a wheelchair? Some might see that as obvious in its own right.

Yet this game can be really fun — and seems to be often. Grappling with the fluidity of those categorizations is lots of fun as a challenge, even as the knower. And every moment can give a dramatic and interesting reveal — when your guess was confirmed as correct or (also a joy to see) when it was wrong in every way.

Also, as a counter to your example of a player placing all their cards in one turn (as a good thing; they won), my friend had this happen as he played all his cards and won, completely by accident. He took this to the mean the game has problems because he so easily stumbled into a random win.

I think, all told, this may become one of those “love it or hate it” games — or maybe “love it or feel ambivalent about it.” Ambivalent in relevant fundamental firmament.

Comment on Every Game Needs a Player Aid by Dr Matt https://www.meeplemountain.com/articles/every-game-needs-a-player-aid/#comment-142634 Thu, 16 Jan 2025 19:09:49 +0000 https://www.meeplemountain.com/?post_type=articles&p=311409#comment-142634 I agree with this 100% – there should be a card or board with a player aids for each player in every box for every game.
Also – another pet peeve; when I see your promotion materials, crowd-funding launch, etc. I want to see THREE things front and center – number of players, age appropriateness, and estimated playing time. Don’t hide these from me. I have passed on more projects because of this little detail. It is either a huge oversight that makes me lack confidence in the designers, or it’s a smarmy tactic to get me to commit my money to a game that may or may not be for me.
