Planning weekend trips while studying abroad sounds like a dream until you realize how many decisions go into making it happen. When you’re figuring out flights, hostels, and exploring the city, it can feel like a lot to juggle.

Take it from Taylor Wilson, a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill. She was able to travel to Paris, Lisbon, and Valencia, all while studying abroad in Granada, Spain. Read on to learn how she researched and planned her own adventures across Europe!

The World at Your Fingertips

One of the best parts about studying abroad is the freedom to explore. In Europe, a new country is often just a short flight or train ride away, which makes every weekend an opportunity for adventure. Here are some ways to organize unforgettable weekend getaways and make the most of every moment abroad.

traveling while abroad

Research Is Key

Most people (including me) overlook the first and most important step: research. It helps you get a sense of where you are and what’s nearby. But don’t stop at destinations; think about experiences, too! Is there something specific you’ve been wanting to try, like a local dish, a famous landmark, or an activity that’s been sitting on your bucket list?

Research Tip: I love watching “Geography Now” videos on YouTube. They explain almost everything you could ever need to know!

Getting to Your Destination

Now that you have the background info, you are ready to start planning the details. So, how will you get there? There are two main ways to travel around Europe: plane and train.

1. Planes

Budget airlines will be your best friend! I highly recommend RyanAir and Vueling – just be sure to read the fine print on bag size with any budget airlin

2. Trains

They’re a very efficient way to get around Europe and can sometimes be quicker than traveling through airports! Eurail and Renfe are typically the most common options.

A few more tips:

  • Look into nearby cities when searching for flights! You might find cheaper options that get you close to your destination. From there, you can take a bus or a train the rest of the way.
  • Websites like SkyScanner, Kayak, or Omio make it easy to compare prices across different airlines and routes, but it’s best to book directly through the official company’s website once you’ve found your deal.
  • When searching online for flights or other transportation, use an incognito window. Travel sites use cookies that can track your browsing history, and sometimes raise prices the more you look!

Finding a Place to Stay

If you’re willing to sacrifice a private room and a bit of comfort, hostels are affordable options and a great way to meet people. Some even include free activities like walking tours! Hostelworld is a helpful site, but always remember to read the reviews.

Keep in Mind

  • Staying outside of the city center will always be cheaper. If you choose this, make sure you’re located close to a public transport stop.
  • If you’re staying in a hostel, bring a lock so you can secure your belongings in a locker when you leave the room!

Experiencing the City

Now for the fun part: deciding what to do! I liked making a list of a few must-see spots or experiences I didn’t want to miss. It helped me make the most of my time without feeling over-scheduled. Plan your itinerary around your travel style, whether that’s scheduling full days or keeping things spontaneous.

Pro tip: Check popular attractions ahead of time because they may require time-entry tickets or advance reservations.

Final Tips for Traveling While Abroad

Lastly, try not to pack too much into one weekend. Focus on exploring one or two cities at a time. In the end, it’s so much better to really experience a few places than to rush through dozens — trust me! I hope this gives you the confidence to plan your own weekend trips and make the most of your adventures abroad!

Study Abroad in a Global Hub vs. Local Haven: What’s Right For You? https://apiabroad.com/blog/study-abroad-in-a-global-hub-vs-local-haven-whats-right-for-you/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 21:27:06 +0000 https://apiabroad.com/?p=49097 The post Study Abroad in a Global Hub vs. Local Haven: What’s Right For You? appeared first on Academic Programs International.

Congrats, you’ve decided to go abroad! Now, where will your home away from home be? With API’s 70+ locations and 1,400+ customizable programs, the opportunities are endless. But there’s no need to worry; we’ll help you narrow it down to the perfect spot for you!

global hub where to go abroad

Study Abroad in a Global Hub

Global hubs bring big energy. Major cities like London, Paris, and Seoul are buzzing with culture, landmarks, amazing universities, and endless things to do. These iconic destinations likely offer:

  • A fast-paced environment
  • Many opportunities for social and cultural events
  • Crowds, stimulation, and excitement around every corner
  • Easy access to international airports and train stations for weekend travel

If you thrive on activity and love being surrounded by people and opportunities, these options may be the perfect spot to call home. But what if you prefer a more laidback vibe?

local haven where to go abroad

Study Abroad in a Local Haven

Local havens like Galway, Granada, and Dubrovnik allow you to experience the culture and exciting opportunities of a new city at your own pace. And this often means a closer-knit, more personalized university experience. The setting allows you to experience:

  • A strong sense of community and familiar faces
  • More opportunities for real conversations to practice language skills
  • Chill cafés, local markets, and walkable streets
  • A slower pace of life that allows for deeper cultural immersion

These destinations are perfect for students who are looking for a place that feels like home halfway across the world!

Deciding Between Global Hub vs. Local Haven

3 things to ask yourself:

  1. Will you be able to achieve your study abroad goals more easily in a city full of energy or a city full of ease?
  2. Do you love the energy of the Big Apple or prefer the charm of a small town in the Northeast? (Studying abroad will be a completely new adventure, but you can reflect on places in the U.S. you’ve enjoyed).
  3. What’s your budget? Major cities usually come with higher living costs, while smaller towns can be more affordable.

Let’s Get You Abroad

Hopefully, this helps you narrow down where your next study abroad adventure will take you. When you’re ready to make it official, visit our How to Apply page for a step-by-step guide, and explore our Program Finder to discover the program that’s the perfect fit for you. Happy travels!

If you’re looking for a way to take your creativity to the next level, go abroad to Florence, just like this Rhode Island College student who took her passion for art beyond the classroom and into the heart of Italy with API. By surrounding herself with centuries of artistic legacy, Caterina Brunell deepened her connection to her craft and transformed her education.

“Study abroad has allowed me to learn and explore the art that I had only studied in textbooks, as well as allowing me to show my love and passion for art through my education in ways I never would have dreamed.”

Florence brought her studies off the page and into real life. She wandered through galleries she once read about. She created art in the very place where the Renaissance began. And most importantly, she connected her passion for art to her education in a way that felt personal, exciting, and deeply fulfilling.

That’s what studying abroad can do! It deepens your passion, stretches your perspective, and gives you the kind of real-world experience that sticks with you long after the semester ends.

It’s Your Turn to Go Abroad to Florence!

Exploring Free Museums in Florence https://apiabroad.com/blog/exploring-free-museums-in-florence/ Thu, 15 May 2025 16:55:01 +0000 https://apiabroad.com/?p=48055 The post Exploring Free Museums in Florence appeared first on Academic Programs International.

Meet Caterina Brunell, an API student who spent her Sundays in Florence soaking up art, history, and culture—all without spending a dime! In this post, she shares her top picks for museums you can visit for free on Florence’s Domenica al Museo (Free Museum Sunday). Get ready to add a few new favorites to your Florence itinerary!

Florence is packed with museums, and getting lost in them is one of the best ways to spend your day. While many visitors flock to the Uffizi Gallery to see Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus or to the Accademia for Michelangelo’s David, there’s so much more to explore—especially when admission is free! On the first Sunday of each month, state-funded museums across the city open their doors at no cost.

If you’re looking to explore free museums in Florence, add these to your list!

The Bargello: Florence’s Oldest Public Building

Once a city hall, later a prison, and now a museum, the Bargello is a treasure trove of Renaissance sculptures and decorative arts. It’s home to Donatello’s famous bronze David—a must-see masterpiece. In the same room, you’ll find Ghiberti and Brunelleschi’s Sacrifice of Isaac bronzes, which sparked the Italian Renaissance in 1401.

This museum is a dream for art and history lovers, filled with armor, metalwork, and intricate carvings. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a local art class sketching amongst the sculptures!

Medici Chapels: A Tribute to Tuscany’s Rulers

Attached to the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Medici Chapels house the grand tombs of Tuscany’s rulers and their families. The highlight? The Chapel of Princes, an opulent octagonal room covered in Florentine hard stone mosaics (commesso) with towering sarcophagi. The breathtaking painted dome and bronze statues make this a strikingly regal space.

Don’t miss the New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo, featuring his stunning sculptures Dawn and Dusk and Night and Day. Some of his original drawings, protected under plexiglass, add an extra layer of history to this already remarkable site.

Palazzo Pitti: A Day-Long Royal Experience

The Pitti Palace, originally purchased by Eleanor of Toledo, became the Medici family’s lavish residence. It’s connected to Palazzo Vecchio by the Vasari Corridor, built for their safety. Today, the palace houses multiple museums and galleries—so plan for a full day here!

Must-See Highlights

  • Palatine Gallery & Royal Apartments: Home to the largest collection of Raphael’s paintings, alongside works by Titian, Caravaggio, and Rubens.
  • Treasury of the Grand Dukes (Silver Museum): A collection of silverware, jewelry, and intricately carved ivory pieces.
  • Gallery of Modern Art: Featuring works from the late 18th to early 20th century.
  • Museum of Costume and Fashion: Displays clothing and jewelry from the 18th century to today!
  • Boboli Gardens: A sprawling outdoor museum with fountains, grottoes, an amphitheater, and the whimsical Fountain of Little Snouts (yes, it’s as fun as it sounds!). Be sure to wear comfy shoes—this place is huge!

Make the Most of Free Museum Sundays

If you love art, history, and wandering through incredible spaces, Florence’s state museums are the perfect way to spend a Sunday. Whether you’re sketching at the Bargello, marveling at Michelangelo’s work in the Medici Chapels, or getting lost in the grandeur of Palazzo Pitti, there’s something for everyone. Which free museums in Florence do you want to visit first?

Ready to Go Abroad in Florence?

Florence is full of history, art, and hidden gems waiting for you to explore. Why just visit when you can live and study in this incredible city? Check out our programs and start your adventure!

Curious about life while interning abroad? Meet Chloe Sperling, an API alum and marketing graduate at San Diego State University who had an extraordinary journey participating in a project-based internship in Paris. Recently, Chloe shared her personal experiences, challenges, and triumphs during her time with API, providing a real-world glimpse into the life of an intern abroad.

Read on to see an insider’s look at Chloe’s unique projects and responsibilities during her internship:

Cultural Immersion

Chloe’s internship took place at Wepicurien, a France based e-commerce business that sells natural French wines. She and three other U.S. interns developed positioning and content for the brand with the goal of increasing brand visibility and sales, representing 30% of their business.

Marked by rich cultural immersion, Chloe interacted with colleagues from France, Sweden, Germany, and Portugal, learning about their languages, customs, and projects. This exposure broadened her understanding of international work cultures and helped her overcome initial apprehensions regarding the language barrier. Her travels across Europe, including attending Bastille Day in Paris and visiting wineries in Bordeaux and Champagne, further deepened her appreciation for diverse cultures and lifestyles.

Skills Gained

Throughout her internship, Chloe worked on Wepicurien’s bilingual website, enhancing her language proficiency in both French and English. This linguistic development was complemented by practical skills in international business and marketing. Engaging with the CEO of Krug champagne provided valuable insights into managing large-scale businesses.

Her experiences contributed significantly to her professional growth, equipping her with unique competencies that later favored her career with Oak View Group, a global sports and entertainment company, and CG Hunter, a startup specializing in luxury faux greenery and home decor. Her internship also impacted her academic career allowing her to earn credits to graduate early!

API’s Support

API inquired about Chloe’s interests and career goals to ensure her internship placement allowed her to maximize learning and career growth. The project-based nature of the internship fostered collaboration and networking, not just with international peers, but also with fellow students from San Diego State University. API’s connections also facilitated unique learning opportunities, such as a personal tour of the St. Laurent museum, enriching Chloe’s understanding of luxury fashion marketing.

Advice for Future Interns

For those considering a similar journey, Chloe encourages future interns to embrace the challenges and opportunities of working in a diverse environment:

“I think about the world in a new way and I gained a new sense of confidence and international knowledge that I can carry with me throughout my life.”

Chloe’s story underscores the importance of leveraging such international experiences for academic and career advancement:

“I am so thankful for this experience because I gained so many opportunities both during the internship and after returning to the states. I benefitted from my experience abroad and expanded professional opportunities coming home.”

Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity to dive into new cultures, make lifelong friends, and see the world. Even while you’re overseas, you can still participate in the upcoming U.S. elections—voting from abroad is simpler than you might think! Here’s an easy guide to ensure your voice is heard.

Step 1: Apply for a Ballot

First things first, apply for an absentee ballot. It’s easy! You can do this at any time during the year, and you can vote from wherever you consider home. You can start with any one of the resources below:

  • Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP): Visit FVAP.gov for comprehensive instructions and to apply for your absentee ballot.
  • Vote from Abroad: Use VoteFromAbroad.org for a user-friendly platform to request your ballot.
  • Overseas Vote Foundation: Another excellent resource is the Overseas Vote Foundation.

You’ll need your overseas address and either the last four digits of your Social Security Number or your driver’s license/state ID number.

Step 2: Receive and Print Voting Materials

Once your application is approved, your voting materials will be emailed to you. Print them out and get ready to vote!

Step 3: Vote and Complete Forms

Carefully read the instructions that come with your ballot. It’s crucial to follow these instructions to the letter, as your vote will not count if you do not complete and return all the required forms.

Step 4: Mail Ballot Back by Deadline

After you’ve filled out your ballot, mail it back to your local election official well before your State’s deadline. Make sure to check your state’s specific requirements for submission, as some may allow you to submit your ballot via mail, fax, or email.

For help, you can contact the voting assistance officer at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate or check additional resources available on FVAP.gov.

Step 5: Confirm Your Ballot was Received

Once you’ve mailed your ballot, you can often track it to ensure it was received and counted. Many states provide ballot tracking services. Check your state’s election website for more information.

Step 6: If Your Ballot Fails to Arrive

If your ballot doesn’t arrive on time, you can still vote using the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). This is an emergency backup ballot available through FVAP.gov.

Additional Resources

Here are some useful resources to guide you through the absentee voting process while abroad:

By following these steps and utilizing these resources, you can ensure that your voice is heard in the upcoming elections, no matter where you are in the world. Happy voting!
