Congrats, you’ve decided to go abroad! Now, where will your home away from home be? With API’s 70+ locations and 1,400+ customizable programs, the opportunities are endless. But there’s no need to worry; we’ll help you narrow it down to the perfect spot for you!

global hub where to go abroad

Study Abroad in a Global Hub

Global hubs bring big energy. Major cities like London, Paris, and Seoul are buzzing with culture, landmarks, amazing universities, and endless things to do. These iconic destinations likely offer:

  • A fast-paced environment
  • Many opportunities for social and cultural events
  • Crowds, stimulation, and excitement around every corner
  • Easy access to international airports and train stations for weekend travel

If you thrive on activity and love being surrounded by people and opportunities, these options may be the perfect spot to call home. But what if you prefer a more laidback vibe?

local haven where to go abroad

Study Abroad in a Local Haven

Local havens like Galway, Granada, and Dubrovnik allow you to experience the culture and exciting opportunities of a new city at your own pace. And this often means a closer-knit, more personalized university experience. The setting allows you to experience:

  • A strong sense of community and familiar faces
  • More opportunities for real conversations to practice language skills
  • Chill cafés, local markets, and walkable streets
  • A slower pace of life that allows for deeper cultural immersion

These destinations are perfect for students who are looking for a place that feels like home halfway across the world!

Deciding Between Global Hub vs. Local Haven

3 things to ask yourself:

  1. Will you be able to achieve your study abroad goals more easily in a city full of energy or a city full of ease?
  2. Do you love the energy of the Big Apple or prefer the charm of a small town in the Northeast? (Studying abroad will be a completely new adventure, but you can reflect on places in the U.S. you’ve enjoyed).
  3. What’s your budget? Major cities usually come with higher living costs, while smaller towns can be more affordable.

Let’s Get You Abroad

Hopefully, this helps you narrow down where your next study abroad adventure will take you. When you’re ready to make it official, visit our How to Apply page for a step-by-step guide, and explore our Program Finder to discover the program that’s the perfect fit for you. Happy travels!

If you’re looking for a way to take your creativity to the next level, go abroad to Florence, just like this Rhode Island College student who took her passion for art beyond the classroom and into the heart of Italy with API. By surrounding herself with centuries of artistic legacy, Caterina Brunell deepened her connection to her craft and transformed her education.

“Study abroad has allowed me to learn and explore the art that I had only studied in textbooks, as well as allowing me to show my love and passion for art through my education in ways I never would have dreamed.”

go abroad to florence

Florence brought her studies off the page and into real life. She wandered through galleries she once read about. She created art in the very place where the Renaissance began. And most importantly, she connected her passion for art to her education in a way that felt personal, exciting, and deeply fulfilling.

That’s what studying abroad can do! It deepens your passion, stretches your perspective, and gives you the kind of real-world experience that sticks with you long after the semester ends.

It’s Your Turn to Go Abroad to Florence!

Whether you’re passionate about art, language, history, or simply soaking up new cultures, API programs in Florence and across Italy have something for you, and we’re here to help you make it happen. Let this be your moment! Reach out to us at studentoutreach@apiexperiencecom if you have questions or want help picking the right program. We’re here to support you every step of the way!

Voting From Abroad: How to Vote Absentee While Studying Abroad https://apiabroad.com/blog/voting-from-abroad-how-to-vote-absentee-while-studying-abroad/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 20:51:21 +0000 https://apiabroad.com/?p=46454 The post Voting From Abroad: How to Vote Absentee While Studying Abroad appeared first on Academic Programs International.

Studying abroad is an amazing opportunity to dive into new cultures, make lifelong friends, and see the world. Even while you’re overseas, you can still participate in the upcoming U.S. elections—voting from abroad is simpler than you might think! Here’s an easy guide to ensure your voice is heard.

Step 1: Apply for a Ballot

First things first, apply for an absentee ballot. It’s easy! You can do this at any time during the year, and you can vote from wherever you consider home. You can start with any one of the resources below:

  • Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP): Visit FVAP.gov for comprehensive instructions and to apply for your absentee ballot.
  • Vote from Abroad: Use VoteFromAbroad.org for a user-friendly platform to request your ballot.
  • Overseas Vote Foundation: Another excellent resource is the Overseas Vote Foundation.

You’ll need your overseas address and either the last four digits of your Social Security Number or your driver’s license/state ID number.

Step 2: Receive and Print Voting Materials

Once your application is approved, your voting materials will be emailed to you. Print them out and get ready to vote!

Step 3: Vote and Complete Forms

Carefully read the instructions that come with your ballot. It’s crucial to follow these instructions to the letter, as your vote will not count if you do not complete and return all the required forms.

Step 4: Mail Ballot Back by Deadline

After you’ve filled out your ballot, mail it back to your local election official well before your State’s deadline. Make sure to check your state’s specific requirements for submission, as some may allow you to submit your ballot via mail, fax, or email.

For help, you can contact the voting assistance officer at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate or check additional resources available on FVAP.gov.

Step 5: Confirm Your Ballot was Received

Once you’ve mailed your ballot, you can often track it to ensure it was received and counted. Many states provide ballot tracking services. Check your state’s election website for more information.

Step 6: If Your Ballot Fails to Arrive

If your ballot doesn’t arrive on time, you can still vote using the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). This is an emergency backup ballot available through FVAP.gov.

Additional Resources

Here are some useful resources to guide you through the absentee voting process while abroad:

By following these steps and utilizing these resources, you can ensure that your voice is heard in the upcoming elections, no matter where you are in the world. Happy voting!

Hearing the stories of students just like you offer more insight into the various experiences you can encounter while studying or interning abroad. By learning from their journeys, you can better prepare for your own adventure, gaining a clearer understanding of what to expect and how to make the most of your time abroadMeet Emily Kane, an API Ambassador who experienced an American-led program abroad in London, England. She discovered the program’s familiar academic structure facilitated a smooth transition and enhanced her educational experience. Additionally, Emily took advantage of many opportunities to immerse herself in the local culture. Read about her journey below!

Emily’s Program Abroad in London

Studying abroad in London at Florida State University’s London Study Centre was an incredible blend of American education and British exploration. I loved every class I took, including Art and Architecture, History of London, British Life and Culture, and Twentieth Century European History. The professors were fantastic, making the learning experience enjoyable and memorable. Here’s all that I learned during my time abroad:

Immersive Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our learning extended far beyond the classroom. We spent only half of the semester indoors; the rest of the time was dedicated to excursions that tied directly to our weekly lessons. We visited numerous sites such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Hyde Park, The British Museum, and more. My favorite was the National Gallery, where my art class often visited. I even went back on my own to admire masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh and Claude Monet. This hands-on, interactive learning approach was unique and engaging, though it required comfortable shoes for all the walking!

American-Led Education Abroad

I attended an American school in London where most of my professors were American. Though it would have been fascinating to make friends with local students and learn about their favorite spots, I appreciated expanding my network by meeting fellow American students from across the country.

Editor’s Note: When choosing between an American-led study abroad program and a locally-led one, consider your comfort level and support needs. American-led programs often provide more familiar structures, built-in support systems, and a network of fellow American students. However, locally-led programs can offer a deeper cultural immersion by engaging more directly with the host community.

Balancing Academic Rigor and Cultural Exposure

Each of my classes met once a week for three hours. Unlike the British system, which typically has one or two significant assignments per semester, the American system offered more frequent assessments. This meant more chances to improve grades, which helped me maintain a solid GPA. Some friends attending fully British universities found their grades slipping, but I was able to keep mine stable!

Final Thoughts

I wholeheartedly recommend the FSU London Study Centre program. It offered a perfect mix of academic rigor and cultural exploration. The professors were outstanding, and the experiences both inside and outside the classroom were invaluable. I have no regrets choosing this program and would do it all over again if I could!

API would like to introduce you to Emily Kane, an API Ambassador who studied abroad in London, England. API Ambassadors are students who go on to share their stories upon their return from their API experiential learning programs abroad. Emily shared the following insights from her journey, describing the opportunities to live like a local.

During the Spring of 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to study in London through the API FSU London Study Centre Program. This experience was unique, especially in terms of the living accommodations, which played a significant role in shaping my overall adventure in London.

Exceptional Living Accomodations

Unlike the typical FSU London Study Centre students, I lived in the IQ Student Accommodation, arranged by API specifically for international students. This setup was a dream! I had the luxury of my own room and bathroom, and I shared a kitchen and common room with a few flatmates. Having my own private space was invaluable. It allowed me to decompress, focus on my studies, and enjoy my own company. I believe the extra space also helped with avoiding any roommate conflict, we all cohabitated peacefully.

Living in IQ Student Accommodation also gave me a unique sense of independence. While I was friendly with my flatmates, we mostly lived independently of each other. My closest friends lived in the same building but on different floors, which was perfect—we could hang out when we wanted but still had our own space.

Embracing Local Life

One of the greatest aspects of living in this accommodation was the opportunity to immerse myself in London life beyond the typical student bubble. Many FSU students stayed within their familiar neighborhood, but I ventured out and explored the city extensively. My neighborhood, Tufnell Park, wasn’t a tourist hotspot, which allowed me to experience London like a true local.

I quickly became a regular at my favorite local spots, especially the Spaghetti House, a charming mom-and-pop Italian restaurant. I went there so often that the staff recognized me and treated me like family. Their shrimp and avocado dish with a unique dressing was my favorite, and I’ve been trying to recreate it ever since returning home. This sense of belonging and familiarity made my stay in London truly special.

studying abroad in london

Building Friendships and Community

The lounge in our building was a central hub for socializing and studying. My friends and I would gather there once a week to play card games, plan trips around Europe, and work on our assignments. One particularly memorable night, we planned a trip to France. Initially, we aimed for the quaint town of Sancerre, known for its wine and picturesque scenery. However, due to travel complications during Easter weekend, we ended up choosing Nice instead. The trip was wonderful, but we still fondly reminisce about our dream of visiting Sancerre.

These moments of camaraderie and shared dreams made my experience richer and more meaningful. It wasn’t just about the places we visited but the bonds we formed and the memories we created together.

Navigating the City Like a Local

Living in Tufnell Park also meant I had to master London’s public transportation system. This independence gave me the confidence to explore the city thoroughly. I never got lost, and each journey became an adventure in itself. I discovered hidden gems, from cozy cafes to bustling markets, and truly felt like a part of the city.

My regular visits to local pubs were another highlight. Unlike the loud clubs and bars I was used to, London’s pubs offered a cozy, community-oriented atmosphere that I loved. My friends and I would go for quiz nights or just to unwind, enjoying the relaxed and friendly environment.

Final Reflections

My time in London with the API FSU London Study Centre Program was transformative. The unique living accommodations not only provided comfort and independence but also encouraged me to explore and embrace the local culture. The friendships I built, the places I discovered, and the sense of community I felt made this experience unforgettable.

I highly recommend this program to anyone considering studying abroad. It offers a perfect blend of academic rigor, cultural immersion, and personal growth. My experience in London was everything I hoped for and more, leaving me with cherished memories and a longing to return.

Study Abroad Challenges: Opportunities for Growth https://apiabroad.com/blog/study-abroad-challenges-opportunities-for-growth/ Wed, 08 May 2024 18:31:49 +0000 https://apiabroad.com/?p=45930 The post Study Abroad Challenges: Opportunities for Growth appeared first on Academic Programs International.

API would like to introduce you to Corrin Charlson, an API Ambassador at Concordia University Wisconsin. API Ambassadors are students who go on to share their stories upon their return from their API experiential learning programs abroad. Corrin shared the following insights from her journey in Maynooth, Ireland, describing the opportunities for growth when encountering the various study abroad challenges.

While the allure of studying abroad often focuses on its highlights, it is sometimes the challenges or the things that don’t quite go as expected that afford the most opportunity for growth and learning. Study abroad challenges might include financial strain, homesickness from being separated from loved ones, or the difficulty in  adapting to a new environment. While these may initially seem daunting, challenges such as these often make for the most robust experiences!

study abroad challenges

Learn More About Financial Responsibility

Studying abroad requires financial investment, but looking back, I see it as an invaluable lesson in financial responsibility. Managing expenses in an unfamiliar setting fostered resourcefulness and sensible decision-making. Through careful planning and budget-friendly alternatives, I was able to mitigate costs and cultivate essential life skills that have stayed with me long after I returned from my experience abroad.

Make New Friends

Leaving behind the familiarity of home, friends, and family was uncomfortable at first, even experiencing feelings of homesickness. Despite being away from loved ones, studying abroad opened doors to new connections. I had the chance to make new friends and form bonds with my peers. We forged friendships through shared adventures and cultural immersion, creating a support system that lasted even after my journey ended.

study abroad challenges

Embrace Cultural Differences

Navigating daily life in a different country presents its own set of challenges. However, those study abroad challenges helped me foster resilience and adaptability. Stepping outside of my comfort zone gave me the chance to cultivate a sense of independence and resourcefulness. Embracing cultural differences instilled me with confidence, traits that have been valuable in an increasingly interconnected world.

Overall, what initially appeared as drawbacks of studying abroad served as catalysts for personal and professional growth. The financial responsibility I learned, the bonds I formed, and the cultural adaptability I gained are significant assets that extend far beyond my academics. By embracing the journey with an open mind and a positive attitude, I emerged with a broader worldview and a newfound sense of confidence!

It’s Your Turn to Go Abroad!

Corrin’s perspective shows the opportunity for growth and overcoming study abroad challenges. If her takeaways resonate with you, it may be time for your own international adventure. For more information about studying or interning abroad in locations across the globe, explore more on our website!

API would like to introduce you to API Ambassador  Emily Aleckson. Emily spent a semester abroad in Ireland during the Spring 2023 term, and returned to share the insights from her journey, specifically career-related skills gained abroad. Read on to learn more!

Before I left to go abroad, I heard countless people say that studying abroad changed their lives and that I won’t be the same person when I return. They were right! Going abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow. I built and strengthened various skills, many of which will help me in my future career. Here is a list of 5 specific career skills I gained abroad!

career skills gained abroad

Career Skill #1: Independence

For many people, going off to college is the first time they are away from home. This was the case for me; however, my college is not terribly far from home. Going abroad gave a whole new meaning to the idea of independence. Though I had plenty of  support from fellow students, on-site staff, and my host university, I recognized that I was the one ultimately responsible for myself. If I had questions, it was my job to reach out and learn more. It was my responsibility to grocery shop for my meals, figure out transportation, and remain organized with my plans and studies.

I didn’t have my family nearby, and the time differences certainly impacted my communication with them. If you haven’t gone abroad, this probably sounds intimidating! However, I am so thankful for this experience because it made me much more confident in myself. Many employers look for individuals who can take initiative and work independently. The opportunity to go abroad certainly improved my confidence, and in turn, my ability to take initiative.

Career Skill #2: Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking

I am definitely the type of person who likes to have a plan, eliminating as many unknown variables as possible. When I left to study abroad, there were some things I knew, but many things I didn’t. While abroad, I learned that although I may not have all the answers, I will find them. There were many times when I was in a position where I didn’t know what to do.

I didn’t know how the metro worked in Paris, or what to do when someone didn’t speak the same language as I do. These situations strengthened my critical thinking skills and taught me a lot about problem-solving. Again, employers seek out these skills in employees because of the important role they play in any position or career. If I’m in a position where I don’t know what to do, at least I know I’m capable of figuring it out.

Career Skill #3: Communication

Although I studied in an English-speaking country, communication is still much different in other countries. From understanding accents and slang to piecing together differing customs or attempting to speak a world language, it’s more difficult to do simple things—even ordering a croissant at a bakery. I never had difficulty communicating with others before going abroad because everyone was just like me.

Learning how to overcome these obstacles and connect with others despite differences was an inevitable byproduct of studying abroad. In my career, I can work with people from all sorts of backgrounds and walks of life. These skills have equipped me to bridge the gap created by multicultural challenges.

Career Skill #4: Organization and Planning

I often look back on my study abroad experience and wonder how I did it all! Despite having fewer responsibilities than I am used to at home, I was very busy during my semester abroad. I think this is a common experience for anyone who wants to make the most of their experience. All my adventures took lots of organization and planning.

For one weekend trip, we had to book our flights, figure out transportation to and from the airport, seek accommodations, schedule excursions ahead of time, calculate our budget, and more. Coordinating all these things was challenging, but now I can apply these skills to my future career. Whether it be organizing my tasks or planning events and travel, I feel prepared to succeed.

Career Skill #5: Adaptability

Adaptability is the name of the game while studying abroad. As soon as you board the plane, you can’t be sure what to expect when you land. Things change constantly, and you have to go with the glow if you want to make the most of your time. The key is to have an open mind and try new things!

If you go to a restaurant and they only have a certain type of food, you have to adapt to the circumstances and try it out! This skill is one of the most valuable that you can have in your career and personal life. Plus, being adaptable takes away a lot of the pressure to make sure everything is perfect, and allows you to enjoy things more!

It’s Your Turn to Go Abroad!

Emily’s experiences highlight the transformative power of studying abroad and the impact it can have on one’s confidence, adaptability, and other valuable skills you can apply to your career. If her takeaways resonate with you, it may be time for your own international adventure. Common Study Abroad Questions from API’s SOC Team https://apiabroad.com/blog/common-study-abroad-questions/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 19:24:27 +0000 https://apiabroad.com/?p=45806 The post Common Study Abroad Questions from API’s SOC Team appeared first on Academic Programs International.

Planning your journey abroad is thrilling, but we understand the importance of clarity and support during this pivotal process. This is why our Student Outreach (SOC) Team is here to help guide you every step of the way, ensuring you have the resources and assistance you need to make informed decisions. Here are some of the most common study abroad questions our team has received in the past month:

I just applied to a program, who do I ask questions?

First off, congratulations on applying, we are so excited you chose API! Shortly after you apply, you will receive an email from your API advisor about your application submission. They will be your main point of contact until you attend your program! They are here to answer any questions that come up. If you are ever unsure who to contact, feel free to reach out to us via chat, and we can get you in touch with the correct person!

Where to find courses and course numbers?

Course syllabus can be found on our Program Finder on the “Course” page! You can filter by location, session, and area of interest. Once you click on a course it will take you to another page. There you will find a brief description, which programs are offered for this course, how many credits, and a downloadable syllabus. The syllabus itself will have the course title and number. If for some reason there is not a syllabus, feel free to reach out to us via chat or email at studentoutreach@apiexperience.com.

How does housing work?

API housing is included in the cost of the program. Each program has different types of housing options, including apartments, student dorms, and local hosts. All of the housing is visited and verified by API staff to make sure it’s safe and meets student needs.
